Neurological and

neurosurgical conditions

Disc herniation, stiffness, pain, numbness, foot drop, dizziness, facial nerve paralysis, incontinence, post-stroke condition

These conditions are characterized by pain, numbness, stiffness, limb paralysis. The most common causes of these pathological conditions are the prolapse or protrusion of a disc, which fall under the umbrella term disc herniation.

These conditions are present in over 70% of LUMBAGO patients.

Dizziness, unsteadiness, tinnitus, blurred vision

Cause
These symptoms are often accompanied by vomiting or pain in one or both arms. This is a sign of a cervical spine problem. It may be due to spondylosis, discopathy, disc herniation it could be a case of „managerial syndrome.“.

Treatment
These conditions are treated with select physical therapy procedures, specially programmed for these issues, i.e. with a combination of laser, magnet, manual massage and kinesiotherapy (exercises).

Paralysis of one side of the face (facial nerve paralysis)

Cause
Muscle paralysis of one side of the face often occurs after cold-induced irritation or head or neck surgery. The patient is unable to close one eye, crease their forehead or chew and has almost no facial expressions.

Treatment
In severe cases, usually after surgery, urgent physical therapy is necessary in order to avoid surgical treatment of the facial nerve. Physical therapy involves a combination of laser, magnet, electrical stimulation and exercise.

Numbness in the hands

Cause
It is caused by inflammation of a pinched nerve in the cervical spine stemming from; spondylosis, discopathy, disc herniation or „managerial syndrome“. It is the result of long-term neglect.

Treatment
Physical therapy is applied to the neck, shoulders and along the arms. It is very important to immediately start treating both the causes and effects. The treatment involves select physical therapy procedures, specially programmed for these conditions, i.e. a combination of laser, electrotherapy, magnet, manual massage and kinesiotherapy (exercises).

Stiffness in the neck or lower back

Cause
It occurs as a result of diminished activity, load carrying, improper exercise, exposure to cold, long-term sitting or standing, or weak muscles, and the patient very often has scoliosis (curved spine), a deformity occurring in childhood. It may be caused by spondylosis, discarthrosis, or disc herniation.

Treatment
It is advisable to do an X-ray or an MRI scan, as per doctor’s orders. The condition is treated with a combination of laser, electrotherapy, magnet, manual massage and kinesiotherapy (exercises). When it is caused by disc herniation spinal traction is applied to the area where disc herniation has occurred.

Severe pain in the lower back and along one leg

Cause
This is inflammation of a nerve in the lower back and the pain may descend to the big toe or the little toe (sciatica). The main problem is in the vertebral column. It could be due to spondylosis, discopathy, disc herniation or „managerial syndrome“.

The physical problem is the result of an unnatural and constrained sitting position (usually at the computer) that can cause problems in the locomotor system. The unpleasant pain makes the patient shift into a more comfortable position, which, however, proves to be pathological, causing the problem to extend to the lumbar spine.

Treatment
Physical therapy combines a number of treatments: electrotherapy, laser, magnet, manual massage and kinesiotherapy (exercises). When the problem is caused by disc herniation spinal traction is applied to the area where disc herniation has occurred. It is always coupled with electrotherapy and laser therapy, which improve the existing situation.

Foot drop

Cause
This is the prolapse of a disc (disc herniation) pressing on the spinal cord and the root of the nerve that lifts the foot (peroneal nerve).

Treatment
Foot drop is treated with electrical stimulation of the peroneal nerve, spinal traction at the prolapse level, electro-, laser and ultrasound therapy.

Decreased skin sensitivity on the extremities

Cause
It occurs as a result of long-term pressure of a prolapsed disc on the root of a sensitive nerve fibre. The fibre slowly atrophies leading to decreased sensitivity to stimuli on the surface of the skin, usually on the thighs, palms or feet.

Treatment
Since this is the case of disc herniation, the treatment is the same as for other conditions with the same cause, i.e. spinal traction, laser therapy (biostimulation) as well as electrical stimulation and diadynamic currents, with special neuropathy programmes which stimulate the atrophied nerve.

Numbness in the feet and hands

Cause
Numbness in the feet or fingers is one of the manifestations of disc herniation or disc protrusion at multiple levels of the spine.

Treatment
It is treated, the same as other disc herniations, with spinal traction, laser stimulation, electrical stimulation and diadynamic currents, following a special neuropathy programme.

Inability to hold in urine (incontinence)

Cause
One of the causes of incontinence can be disc herniation, which puts pressure on the spinal cord at the level of the centre for bladder control.

Treatment
This condition is treated with controlled spinal traction at the point where the disc has slipped out of its outer ring, electrotherapy and laser therapy and, once healed, it is maintained by kinesiotherapy (exercises).

Post-stroke condition

Cause
A stroke usually leads to weakness in one arm and, very often, the entire side of the body or even weakness in one side of the body and loss of speech. The patient is conscious but unable to coordinate movements voluntarily and is often unable to walk.

Treatment
Rehabilitation with kinesiotherapy gradually improves the patient’s condition and restores the function of the upper and lower limbs, normal gait, coordination of movements and muscle strength. It is essential to begin rehabilitation immediately after the stroke (the next day). The treatment requires persistence and daily exercises with a specially trained physical therapist.
